Oseng-Rees Reflection Ltd is a Consultancy and Design Service for Artisan Bespoke Fused Recycled Glass Artworks. We are dedicated to creating sustainable fused glass artworks for interior and architectural installations using only waste glass. Our aim is to reduce our carbon footprint by using only recycled glass and to provide beautiful, unique pieces of art for both commercial and residential spaces.

With a love and passion for up-cycling, sustainability, arts and science, you will get a bespoke piece of art with a story attached to the product.

No additives such as resin, concrete or other inorganic materials are included, and it is made from 100% recycled glass. The material is made by carefully selecting end-consumer glass bottles or plate glass, cleaning and crushing the glass before the broken glass is arranged through an artistic process and fused into one large panel.

The glass goes through a specially developed firing schedule that transform the glass into a marvel-like material which no longer look or behave like glass. Each individual pieces of the broken glass can still be seen, and the sustainable recycled glass material have more similarities to a stone or ceramic material.

It has been compared with stone, marble or ceramic and can be used as privacy screen, wall panels, light shades and even award trophies.

Oseng-Rees Reflection is the only company in UK that collect and process end-consumer bottles or plate glass for making large architectural panels. Both manufacturing process and business philosophy is to stay true to sustainable development. The manufacturing process differentiates from other recycled glass manufacturers in such a way that it uses randomly collected end-consumer bottles or plate glass to make a sustainable material from 100% recycled glass.

It has no additives, resin or inorganic binders and can go back in the recycling stream again. Any other approaches to create a ‘recycled glass material’ deflects the public to believe they are purchasing truly sustainable products and stifles a nation’s ambitions of a circular economy. The business ethos is to stay true to sustainable development, collect locally, make the product in as sustainable way as possible, thriving towards a zero-carbon mission.

Fused recycled glass

Fused glass is consuming considerable less energy than a glass blowing. Oseng-Rees Reflection make the panels using a low temperature fusion technique. For comparison, fused glass uses temperature ranges between 700-900°C whilst glass blowing techniques ranges between 1300-1500°C.

If small glass blowing studio has its furnace operating for 300 days a year it will on average release 31.6 tons CO2 per year. This does not consider the glory hole or the annealing kilns that glass blowing studios need in their production. As comparison, if a kiln would operate for 300 day per year would releases only 1.8 tons CO2.

With a same amount of concrete and fused glass productions per year, glass from Oseng-Rees Reflection will have a 20% less energy consumption compared to concrete, and this does not consider the energy saving by using a waste material.

Cleaning

Resistance to staining

A test was conducted on recycled glass tiles using the ‘Standard Test Method for Determination of Resistance to Staining, ASTM Designation C 1378-97’ . This standardised method assesses the staining resistance of ceramic glazed wall tiles. The recycled glass tiles were subjected to this test to determine their staining resistance.

The test involved exposing the surface of the tiles to a staining agent for 24 hours, after which the agent was cleaned off according to a defined methodology. The tiles were then inspected visually for stains and results were reported qualitatively.

Results. The test has shown that it is difficult to permanently stain the dark tiles. In the case of white tiles, a Nanogate coating was highly effective. Results confirmed the acceptability of the tiles for the architectural application.

Hydrophobic Nanotechnology Coating Offer

We are now offering the option to coat our recycled glass tiles with a hydrophobic nanotechnology layer. This advanced coating creates a surface that repels water and other liquids, significantly enhancing the tiles' resistance to staining. The hydrophobic layer works by creating a microscopic barrier on the surface of the tiles, preventing liquids and stains from adhering. This not only maintains the appearance of the tiles but also makes cleaning and maintenance easier.

Photoelastic Stress Measurements

A detailed investigation of the compatibility of fused recycled bottle glass was undertaken using a polariscope. The photoelastic strain measurement system A GFP 1400 with an automated polariscope. The glass objects was illuminated with a circularly polarized light which becomes elliptically polarized as it passes through the stressed glass sample. The degree of the ellipticity in the light is then proportional to the level of stress in the glass, and the computer software DeltaVision analyzed the measurement in a very high quality presentation, both visual and quantitative.

Compatibility of fused recycled bottle glass was undertaken using photoelastic stress measurements. Temperature used ranged between 800-900°C in contrary to hot glass-melt of 1300°C. The separation of bottles based on a so-called punt mark identified each individual bottles origin. With the punt mark identification, using a practice-based approach combined with scientific experimentation it was found that compatible material can be produced. Four Point Bend Test

A systematic study has been undertaken into the suitability of fused recycled bottled glass as a material for architectural applications. The method of testing was done by transverse bending called third Point loading method for testing the flexural strength. A glass specimen is laid across two supporting bars and is bent by load applied through a third bar at the center. The modulus of rupture was calculated from the load required to cause fracture.

Specimens with a variety of parameters such as kiln schedule, temperature, colour development and glass fragment sizes was assessed with for each set of experiments. A comparison was made with commercially available ceramic tiles. Statistical analysis of empirical strength measurements were then used to assess the probability of a given strength. 

The conclusion is that the fused recycled glass material has been proven stronger than one commercially available ceramic tile and can be used for architectural applications. For more information, please email us.
